Here in the beautiful town of Manzanita, Oregon, you will find a modest little bookstore called Ekahni. Franz and Sherry Hasslacher are the proud owners of Ekahni Books, and we look forward to serving you!
The Front of Ekahni Books
Our book shop was named for the local Native American stories of the “Great Spirit” that dwells in the mountain to our north, Neahkanie. According to legend, “Ne” or “Neah” means “place of”. And “Ekahni” or “Ekahnie” means “The Great Spirit” or “The Supreme Being.” So, here is our shop, at the base of “The Place of the Great Spirit”, where the ocean meets the land. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor this special place than to name our bookstore “Ekahni.” We hope you will agree!
In our shop, we sell new books with an emphasis on local history and small, independent publishers. We also sell used books from all over the world. There may even be a few rare and antique books found on our shelves from time to time… you never know what treasures you will discover hidden within our famous “idiosyncratic selection”!
We pride ourselves on excellent personalized and professional customer service. If you collect books by a particular author, let us know! We can keep your information on file and when a new book comes available, we’ll give you a call. We also order used, rare or hard-to-find books from all over the world utilizing several networks of independent booksellers. (We don’t buy books from large online corporations- ever.) Some orders are available as quickly as 24-48 hours from the moment you let us know you want it! So, let us do the work for you. You’ll be glad you did!
We also make recommendations to those who want them based on what you are reading now, and what you have read in the past. Check out our “Featured Books” page. Have a mood in mind for a book you’d like to read? Looking for a fun, beach-y page turner or a thrilling tale of fantasy? Odds are we can make a good recommendation. You might even discover a new favorite!
In addition to books, we also sell gorgeous stained glass windows handmade by one of our brilliant local artisans. These are suitable for hanging up in your home, or we can put you in touch with an artist that might create a custom order just for your needs. If you are looking for different types of art, you will also find a rotating gallery of regional artwork by local artists displayed on our walls and shelves available for enjoying in the moment or for sale.

Any time of year is a good time to be in Manzanita, whether you are watching the storms rage on from the mighty Pacific, or getting a tan on our lovely stretch of beach.
