First off this week, we wanted to give a big thank you to our community for the best weekend we have had here since taking over the shop in December! It was wonderful to see so many of our friends, neighbors and part time locals out for Valentine’s and President’s Day, enjoying the beautiful weekend we had.
Secondly, tomorrow marks the 125th anniversary of the publication of Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. This book, besides being a classic of American Literature, also has the earned the distinction of being one of the most banned books in history. It all started with a library in Concord, Massachusetts- where they banned the book in 1885 due to “coarse language”. Since then, “Huck Finn” has remained in the Top 10 of banned books in the United States for 125 years, primarily for the use of “the n-word” over 200 times throughout the text. The book continues to be banned in some places to this day.
We are lucky enough to have three paperback copies here in our shop, each retailing for $4.99. They are touted as the “only comprehensive edition” because they include 30 facsimile pages, in Mark Twain’s handwriting, of the original manuscript of what would become the book. You get a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a master, crossing out and re-writing in places to make the story even stronger in places, softer in others.
We also have three new books in this week, described below, that have found a home in our “Locals Only” section. Also don’t forget 10% off the purchase of 3 books or more throughout the entire month of February.
As we mentioned last week, we are happy to say we have the books for the upcoming Writer Series the week:
“The Russian Dreambook of Color and Flight” by Gina Ochsner
“Strand” and “Day Hiking Oregon Coast” by Bonnie Henderson
“Diego: Bigger Than Life” by Carmen Bernier-Grand
